Quilting On the Go

I don’t know about you, but sometimes it’s hard to make time to get in front of the sewing machine. There are kids’ sporting events, doctor’s appointments and waiting rooms, pool parties, and none of them have space for me to plug in my BERNINA. But we’re still going to sew, right? Here’s our tips for creating the perfect portable sewing kit so you’re ready to quilt from anywhere.

Pick a good project.

Any quilting project is a good project, but a good portable project for sewing from anywhere is one that’s easy to work on in small, manageable pieces. Hand-sewing projects like English Paper Piecing, binding, or hand embroidery are perfect for on-the-go stitching.

Choose a compact, portable bag.

Now that you’ve got your project, you need a project bag. You can go two ways with this; either go with a bag or container with plenty of pockets and organization or something that is clear and easy to see what’s inside. Our Quilting Mayhem project bags come in a couple of sizes, but they have clear vinyl so you can easily see your project and tools. We also like the secure closure of a zipper to ensure nothing spills out and gets lost while you’re sewing on the go.

Essential tools in your kit.

This is our list of must-have tools for your portable sewing kit:

  • Needles: Don’t rely on a single needle to get you through your project. Make sure you have several in a needle case.
  • Thread: Bring along the spool in the color you need for your project. If you can use a prewound bobbin, you’ll save space in your bag.
  • Scissors or Snips: A small pair of sharp embroidery scissors or thread snips is perfect for trimming threads on the go.
  • Pins and Clips: a mini container or magnetic case for pins and clips keeps them secure and easy to grab as you work.
  • Thimble: Depending on what you’re stitching, a thimble might be a key part of your kit. Make sure you get one that fits well. A thimble that’s too tight or too loose can do more damage than good.
  • Marking Tools: We love Frixion pens! Sometimes you just need to mark your fabric for intersections and corners while you’re stitching. A Frixion pen will disappear with heat which makes it perfect for fabric.

Keep It Simple, Stitcher!

Remember that this is the on-the-go version of your sewing kit. Keep it light and simple! You don’t was to be lugging around heavy supplies or about losing something important

By carefully selecting the essentials, you can enjoy your sewing time wherever you find yourself when you’re out and about. Whether you’re poolside, at a park, or waiting in the car, you’ll have everything you need to keep stitching. And if you’re missing something in your kit, come to Quilting Mayhem and we’ll get you set to quilt from anywhere!
