Refresh Your Quilting Stash

Back to school season isn’t just for the kids, it’s for the quilters, too! Forget sharpening pencils and packing a lunch, ok quilters also like snacks so snacks are allowed, but now is the perfect time to take a look at your stash and restock your sewing and quilting essentials. Having a well-stocked supply of your go-to notions and fabrics makes it easy to sew whenever the mood strikes. Let’s go over the key items you’ll want to make sure are in your sewing room.

Refresh your fabric stash.

First things first, let’s talk fabric! If you’re like us, your fabric stash is your pride and joy. But are your basics running low? Do you have enough Kona Snow? Because you know you’ll get an idea to make ghost mug rugs next month and won’t have any. Look through your stash and take note of any favorite fabrics that need replenishing before we get into the hectic holiday making season.

Stock up on thread.

Every quilter knows that good thread makes a good quilt. Check your supplies and see if you’re running low on any essential colors. Make sure that you have some good medium neutrals, black, and white for piecing and general sewing. Then if you’re a quilter, check on your perfect-for-pantograph-quilting thread colors. You may have five cones, on the other hand you may be playing thread chicken on your next project. For you machine embroiderers, we checked and you need all the colors. All of them!

Needles, needles, needles!

Nothing is worse than breaking a needle mid-project and coming to a complete standstill while you’re in the quilting zone. Check your needle supply now. Make sure you have good universal needles, sharps, and some specialty needles in your most-used sizes. It’s also good to have some hand-sewing needles on hand for those little finishing touches and binding.

Take a look at your rotary cutting station.

Change your blade. Do it. And while you’re doing it, see if you need more blades and add it to your Quilting Mayhem shopping list. A sharp blade makes all the difference, and will even help your cutting mat last longer. Speaking the mat, does it have dead spots or spot gouged out of it? Is it warped? Make sure it’s in good shape to keep those cuts square. And pull out your favorite ruler; does it still have square corners or are they chipped away? Time for a new ruler if they’re looking a little ragged.

Don’t forget the extras.

There are so many little things that make sewing and quilting so much easier; pins, clips, marking tools, and seam rippers are all essentials that you don’t want to be caught without.

Got your list of things to restock? Great! Find them all at Quilting Mayhem and be fully prepared for a creative stitching session.
