Add Raw Edge Applique to Your Quilt

We think every quilt is beautiful, but sometimes you can finish a quilt top and think ‘that’s missing something.’ Raw edge appliqué might be just the technique you’re looking for!

What is raw edge appliqué?

Raw edge appliqué is a technique where fabric shapes are cut out and adhered to a quilt top without turning under the edges. Instead, the edges are left raw, and the shapes are secured with fusible web and stitching. The stitching can be a zig zag, buttonhole, or a straight stitch close to the edge. Raw edge appliqué is quick, easy, and adds a playful, textured look to your quilt.

Reasons why we love raw edge appliqué

It’s simple and quick.

There’s hardly any prep work to create your raw edge appliqué. All you have to do is trace your pattern on the fusible (we like SF101 or Heat n Bond Lite), rough cut around them, and then fuse the fusible to the wrong side of your fabric. You don’t have to turn any edges under. Just cut, fuse, and stitch.

Raw edge appliqué adds texture and dimension to your quilt.

Because the edges are raw (not turned under) when they’re secured to your quilt with stitching, edges of your appliqué will fray slightly over time, add in soft, textured layer to your project for more depth and interest.

It can hide mistakes.

We know, no one ever makes a mistake in their quilt, right? We certainly haven’t (wink wink). But if that were to happen, or if the dog chewed on your quilt, or you just have a spot that you’re not thrilled with, cover it with raw edge appliqué!

It’s more durable than you think.

Don’t worry about the appliqué coming undone in the wash. Once your shapes are stitched down, they’re secure.

Tips for adding appliqué to your quilt top

You may look at your quilt top and know exactly where you want to place your appliqué right away. Or, you may know that you want to add it to your quilt but aren’t sure where. The answer, experiment! Try out different layouts to see what works best for your design.
